Record-Shattering Fall Enrollment

by The Charger Bulletin | May 28, 2008

Released by the University of New Haven:

Record-Shattering Enrollment at UNH:
100-Percent Increase in Incoming Class is Extremely Rare

West
Haven, Conn. – The word is out: The University of New Haven (UNH) is
being transformed with new programs and facilities, bringing the
University’s enrollment to a record-shattering high. Increasing an
incoming class 100 percent in one year is extremely rare, but UNH has
experienced an “off-the-charts” spike in enrollment for fall 2008. By
the crucial national “deadline” of May 1, deposits were up 104 percent
over last year, following a dizzying number of applications.

“When
a University’s enrollment spikes 10 to 20 percent within a year, its
competitors take note,” says UNH Vice President of Enrollment
Management Dennis Nostrand. “What UNH has experienced is noteworthy and
speaks to the transformation that has occurred at the University the
past few years.” He adds that “It’s extremely rare to have an increase
of this kind in just one year, especially when the high school
population has leveled off in the Northeast and has begun to decline in
Connecticut.”

The enrollment increase is the result of a
confluence of several unique factors, Nostrand says. Foremost in the
University’s efforts is spreading the word about its new facilities-the
$15.5 million David A. Beckerman Recreation Center and a new, $46
million 400-bed, apartment-style, residence hall slated for ground
breaking in June. “Add the recent announcement that football will
return to UNH as part of the Northeast-10 Athletic Conference in the
fall of 2009, and the University’s position as one of the largest
study-abroad providers in the nation, and you start to see the formula
that we’ve developed in the last few years-and that’s just the
beginning.”

Other recent improvements include two new
$1-million turf fields, a trading room floor, known as the Samuel S.
Bergami, Jr., Learning Center for Finance and Technology, and a
University College with myriad programs life-long learning and
customized corporate training to area and regional businesses, among
others.

A leader in experiential education, the University of New

UNH’s Housing Crisis

by Rebecca Johnson | May 15, 2008

Dear Students:

I hope that you have had
the opportunity to read President Kaplan’s article in last week’s
Charger Bulletin. The article outlines the enormous progress made over
the last few years at the University and why it is important for
enrollment to grow as growth will benefit the student body in many
ways.

Many of you have
expressed concern about the housing situation for next fall.
Unfortunately, we are unable to offer housing to seniors in their fifth
year, current commuter students and students who paid their housing
deposits after the deadline. I am writing to let you know what the
University has done to date to assist the students we are unable to
accommodate on campus.

This year, we experienced
a record number of new students interested in attending UNH, many of
whom have paid enrollment deposits, coupled with a large number of
returning students all looking for housing. As indicated in my previous
letter to you, we worked very hard to secure a 200 bed apartment
building in Westville which we could manage as a residence hall. Since
we were unable to realize this plan, we continued to look for
additional options for students and were able to secure a UNH student
rate at the Wintergreen Apartments for students leasing on their own. A
number of students have already chosen to sign leases at the
Wintergreen for fall.

Yesterday, the USGA and
Dean of Students Office sponsored a highly successful off campus
housing fair in Dodds Hall. There was a great student response and we
hope that those who attended were able to secure an apartment for fall
from one of the complexes represented. Roommate matching was available
at the fair and students who are still looking for a roommate may go to
the Office of Residential Life where there is a listing of students
needing a roommate. Information about the complexes is also available
in ORL.

I want to assure you that
the University and the Student Affairs staff will do everything
possible to assist students who are still looking for off campus
housing. Our goal is to provide you with a positive college experience
that supports your learning in every way.

Best wishes for much success on your exams and for a wonderful summer break. We look forward to your return in August.
