E-journals Revolutionize Research

by Marion Sachdeva | September 24, 2008

WEST HAVEN–Journal articles, especially from “peer-reviewed”
scholarly research journals, are at the core of academic research and essential
background for writing research papers. Magazines are a good source for news
about the world, sports teams, celebrities, hobbies, etc. Until a few years
ago, the best place to find a good collection of all these was the library
shelves, where they sat lined up in rows by title and date. But increasingly
these days the best place to find them is on the computer, as more publications
become available in electronic form, more people have access to computers, and
there are more routes to access the publications (such as the library web site,
the journal or magazine’s own web site, or Google).

The UNH library pays for subscriptions to thousands of
e-journals for your use. We have many databases which include their published
articles-both general ones with broad subject coverage, and subject specialty
databases such as Criminal Justice Periodicals, PsychArticles, Literary,
Science, and History
Reference Centers
.
We also subscribe to collections from various publishers whose journals cover
topics relevant to academics at UNH, such as Sage Publications and the IEEE
Computer Society. Then there are the many “open source” journals, which make
their contents available freely on the web. You can find a great collection of
these listed with under the Journals link on the library home page, along with
the many journals which we pay for.

E-journals provide many advantages to students. You can
search for your topic across many years of many journals at once by entering
your keywords in the database or publishers collection search box. You can also
open these journals from anywhere with a computer and your campus ID card. No
pages in these journals will be damaged or torn out. There is value-added
content to e-journals: many have hyperlinks to other related articles or web
sites. The IEEE Computer Science Digital Library includes, along with full text
of their journals and for the same price as their print journals alone, many
hundreds of conference reports, which the faculty have said are essential for
research in the field.

Why did I mention Google, you ask, when your professor has
said that you may not use web sites in your research? Well, in Google, and
especially Google Scholar, search results include citations for many published
journal articles. And if our library subscribes to the journal’s online
version, and you are searching within the campus IP network, then you can often
access this legitimate research source from Google.

If you haven’t already, please do jump in to this great pool
of scholarly research and general interest information on the Library web page
of the UNH web site. Swimming instruction (searching assistance) is always
available at the Library Information Desk, or by calling 932-7189, or visiting
the Ask-a-Librarian link on the web page.

Simpson Back in Court

by Heather Brown | September 24, 2008

Former football star O.J. Simpson is once again making
headlines. He is currently on trial for an incident that occurred in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Prosecutors allege that Simpson and co-defendant, Clarence Stewart, met two
memorabilia dealers in a hotel room in order to get back personal items taken
from Simpson after the death of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and that the
memorabilia dealers were held at gunpoint during the meeting. Simpson entered
the hotel room accompanied by four men in addition to himself and Stewart.

Simpson alleges that yes, he did enter the hotel room to
speak with the two memorabilia dealers, but it was only to retrieve personal
affects that were stolen from him. He denies the state’s allegations that two
of the men in the room with him brought guns at his request and were waving
them around as a means of intimidation.

The all-white jury heard recordings made by Thomas Ricco of
the incident in question. On the recordings, Simpson can be heard yelling,
“Don’t let nobody out of here! You think you can steal my s— and sell it? I
trusted you man!”

Other recordings heard by the jury also backed up Simpson’s
claim that there were no guns present in the room and that he “never saw a gun,
[he] wouldn’t let anyone in with a gun.”

Ricco is an acquaintance of one of the memorabilia dealers
and a friend of Simpson. He recorded the meeting and the aftermath to ensure
that he would be compensated for the things taken from him.

Simpson was acquitted by a Los Angeles court in 1995 of the
double-murder of his ex-wife and her friend, Roland Goldman. He was then found
to be civilly responsible for their deaths in 1997 and ordered to pay 33.5
million dollars to the families of the deceased.

Simpson and Stewart have been charged with 12 counts of
robbery, conspiracy, kidnapping, and assault. If found guilty, both defendants
could receive a life-in-prison sentence.

Simpson’s four other cohorts have pleaded guilty and have
agreed to assist the prosecution in its case against Simpson and Stewart.

RECSports Kicks Off Season with Soccer

by Kat Wilberding | September 24, 2008

WEST HAVEN–On Sunday, Sept. 14, RECSports literally kicked
off Season One sports with outdoor soccer. On a hot and muggy Sunday, students
came out to Kayo field to play an afternoon full of games in the Co-REC and Men’s
Divisions. Hopefully it will cool off a little for next week’s games. For all
of those students playing, humid or not, remember to hydrate.

Sunday’s soccer games were a great start to Season 1.
RECSports Grad Assistant, Andrea Keefe would like to compliment all the teams
for good sportsmanship. The teams played good games while keeping it fun. Thank
you to all who participated.

Of the many games on Sunday one ended in a tie with the
Bandits, 80′s Babies, Golden Legs, Jon’s Lunch, and Bangin’ Bulldogs claiming
one win a piece. The Bandits and the 80′s Babies deserve high praise for
fighting through the heat and playing well despite having to play back-to-back
games at one point.

Outdoor soccer will be played every Sunday for the next few
weeks, with regular season ending on Sunday, Oct. 5. Play-offs will follow. To
keep track of how the teams are doing and who is looking good for play-offs
check out the “Outdoor Soccer Standings” which are posted on the RECSports’
bulletin board located across from the Equipment Issue Desk in the Beckerman Recreation Center.
The standings will be updated every Friday.

The rest of Season One’s sports were played throughout the
week from Monday to Thursday at a jam packed Beckerman Recreation
Center
. Thanks go out to
all of the fans that came out and supported their favorite RECSports teams.
Look for future articles highlighting each of those sports. Also, check out the
RECSports bulletin board for more information on all Season One sports.

Lastly I would like to congratulate Jon’s Lunch for being
this week’s Participants of the Week.

Jackson Brings the Heat in Terrace

by Erin Ennis | September 24, 2008

Lakeview Terrace was exactly what any viewer could expect
from a Samuel L. Jackson film. While there were no highly publicized catch
phrases, Jackson‘s thriller was interesting,
simplistic, and allowed the Academy Award nominee to completely steal every
scene.

Lakeview Terrace starts the way most Jackson
thrillers do; a seemingly normal setting with Jackson
starring as a completely unusual character. In Lakeview Terrace Jackson plays Able Turner, a member of the LAPD
with a jaded past who becomes interested in his new neighbors, Patrick Wilson
of The Phantom of the Opera and Kerry
Washington of Save the Last Dance.

Without giving
away too many spoilers, any viewer can expect that Samuel L. Jackson played the
villain in Lakeview Terrace (one of
his more favored roles). But what was not expected was the complexity of the
character’s background and the deep moral issues that spiraled throughout the
film. The death of Turner’s wife (not shown in the movie) is the most pivotal
plot point of the entire film and sets the stage for Samuel L. Jackson’s
apparent psychosis. From bright backyard lights, to breaking and entering, to
slash tires, Samuel L. Jackson’s Able Turner proves that having a cop as a
next-door-neighbor may be the worse thing you ever dreamed of.

With
a driving plot, an acceptable cast of background characters, and Samuel L.
Jackson as the leading man, Lakeview
Terrace
proved to be exactly what every Jackson
fan thought it would be. It might not be Snakes
on a Plane
with strange required catch phrases and it might not be as
dynamic as Pulp Fiction, but Lakeview Terrace will surely become one of Samuel L. Jackson’s more noted
films and one to be seen by the action-loving-moviegoer for a long time.

FSC Gears Up for Fire Prevention Week

by ashleyjohnson | September 24, 2008

WEST HAVEN–Your
home and dorm should be a safe haven, but do you regularly check for fire
hazards? If not, there is the potential for danger. Fire departments responded
to nearly 400,000 home fires in 2006 alone. That’s why the theme of Fire
Prevention Week in 2008 is
“It’s Fire Prevention Week: Prevent Home Fires!”

From Oct. 5
through Oct. 11, 2008, Fire Science Club members and fire advocates will be
spreading the word to or community here at the university. We hope that with a
little extra caution and prevention of the leading causes of home and dorm
fires-such as cooking, electrical and smoking-materials-is within our power.

We hope that you
will come out and join us for our many activities to get you prepared and aware
of how to prevent a home fire. Your dorm is your home so treat it like such and
prevent home fires!

Some events for fire prevention
week include: a fire prevention table for information and fun items, Charlie the
Charger as a fire fighter, an extinguishing demonstration in the quad,
residence hall programs, a Burn Box to simulate a fire condition, and a smoke
house, just to name a few. So come out and have fun with us for Fire Prevention
Week 2008!

Elections Kick-Off

by louiseswood | September 24, 2008

On Monday Sept. 21, 2008, the USGA
elections committee under the direction of Kristina Bensley, USGA Executive
Assistant, held their official candidates meeting. The meeting marked the
official beginning of the Class of 2012 and Class of 2010 elections.

This year the USGA is extremely
excited about class elections as candidates for class officers are now allowed
to have campaign teams similar to those the USGA President and Treasurer
candidates have had in the past. Some candidates have chosen not to create
campaign teams stating that they are trying to play it safe with such strict
guidelines, but the majority of prospective class officers have developed
significant size teams.

Class elections will take place
online via your UNH e-mail from Wednesday, Oct. 1to Friday, Oct. 3. Only those
students who fit into the university’s description of a freshman or junior,
which is based on the number of credits you carry, will receive the ballots.
Please be sure to vote for your class representatives!

Freshmen Live and Learn in Breakthrough Program

by Joann Wolwowicz | September 24, 2008

WEST
HAVEN–Living on campus can be one of the more terrifying experiences for
college freshmen. Add on nerves about new classes, meeting new people, and
managing time, and freshman can become easily overwhelmed. To ease some of this
pressure, the University
of New Haven
offers certain
majors the opportunity to live together all on one floor. Hosting a total of
four Living and Learning Communities, students have the opportunity to dorm
with students who have the same classes, the same course load, and the same
academic interests.

Located in both New Hall and Botwinik Hall, the Living and Learning
Communities, or LLC’s, provide extra benefits to students who chose to apply
for these dorms. Forensic Science, Business, and Engineering are housed in Botwinik,
occupying two floors, while the Music LLC is located in New Hall. Not only are
the residents all majoring in the same area, but the Resident Assistants are as
well. By having a RA who has already experienced freshman year in a particular
area of study, students’ questions are answered by someone who knows firsthand.

Additionally,
tutors are provided for the students at certain hours of the day to help out in
various subjects that could be giving students difficulty, such as Chemistry,
Pre-Calculus, or even Calculus II. Professors from the different majors also
come to the LLC’s and hold discussions and advisor meetings to help the
students. Trips and special events such as discussions or guest speakers are
planned for the different LLC’s during the year. These events are tied to the
students particular majors and are designed to spark their interests in topics
close to their areas of study.

Moving
in two days before the rest of the undergraduate students, the LLC participants
had extra time to settle in and avoid the move-in rush that occurred on the
official move-in day. There were various activities planned for the LLC’s
official orientation such as scavenger hunts, trips to downtown New Haven, rope courses, an
LLC BBQ and various other bonding activities.

Within weeks of living together, the participants in the LLC program already
have study groups and friendships formed. Confusion about assignments is put at
ease because roommates also share classes. Also, the connections that are
formed between the residents and the professors have proved to be greater than
the basic in-class relationship.

With so
many resources available, the LLC’s should be something every incoming freshman
should consider when applying if an LLC is available for their major. Any
interested student should submit an application once accepted into the university,
with an essay explaining why they would like to participate in the program. Decisions
are mailed out in mid-July.

Girl Gives Raunchy Laughs

by Mia Becker | September 24, 2008

It’s a classic love story: boy meets girl, boy falls in love
with girl, girl dumps boy, and boy hires his best friend to make girl run back
to boy. My Best Friend’s Girl,
starring Dane Cook, Kate Hudson, and American Pie’s Jason Biggs is full of
raunchy and perverted laughs with a light undertone of sympathetic romance as
the cherry on top to an entertaining romantic comedy.

Jason Biggs plays Dusty, a hopeless and sweet romantic who
is head over heels in love with Alexis (Hudson).
After scaring Alexis off by proclaiming is undying love for her after only five
weeks of casual dating, he turns to his best friend Sherman “Tank” Turner (Cook). Tank is a
professional dater, in fact, a bad dater. He is paid by various men in dating
troubles to take out their romantic prospect and show them the worst date of
their lives to make them run back to their boyfriends and mend their
relationships.

Cook.jpg

Business was good for Tank, until he met Alexis. As fate would
have it, Alexis doesn’t fall for Tank’s dating antics, and they soon begin a
relationship. Their involvement is kept a secret from her ex-boyfriend/his best
friend Dusty, until Dusty soon finds out. The betrayal creates great tension
between Dusty and Tanks friendship. After a few months, Tank takes matters into
his own hands and prioritizes his relationships.

The movie ends on a high note, and depicts a compelling
factor that sometimes looks can be deceiving and opposites do attract. My Best Friend’s Girl previews depicted
what might be another light romantic comedy starring Kate Hudson, with a few
laughs from Dane Cook, and on the same level of When Harry Met Sally or Sleepless
in Seattle,
however, I was
happily surprised when it was better than I was expecting. Finally! A real R-rated
romantic comedy. The film also features some beautiful shots of Boston, and a promising
soundtrack.

The supporting cast included Alec Baldwin, and Mean Girl’s
Lizzy Caplan. And in case anyone was wondering, yes, the title track (“My Best
Friend’s Girl” by The Cars) does make an appearance.

“Stupid Rich People”

by Zack Rosen | September 17, 2008

Know
who I don’t like? “Stupid rich people.” Take note that there is a vast
difference between “rich people” and “stupid rich people,” however. Translated
from Latin, “rich people” is “(n.) a group of wealthy individuals who may enjoy
golfing;” “stupid rich people” is “(n.) a group of individuals who have to
enjoy golfing.”

Notice
the two differences in their definitions: for “stupid rich people,” there is
the subtraction of “wealthy” and a replacement of “have to” instead of “may.”
Basically put, “stupid rich people” don’t necessarily need to be rich. They
just need to be stupid. That’s why “stupid” comes first, bozo.

Let me
explain.

John
McCain, although I don’t know him personally, is probably not a “stupid rich
people.” Sure, he may be stupid in certain aspects and his seven houses
certainly don’t shout out any poor qualities (pun DEFINIITELY intended!); but
JMac Daddy is simply “rich people”-and stupid is the icing that comes alongside
with the McCake.

George
W. Bush is a “stupid rich people,” however. He’s rich, his family is oil-hungry
(goes alongside with the richness aspect), and anyone who doesn’t recognize him
as stupid needs their eyes checked…along with every other part of their body.
Also, he sucks at golf-yet plays anyways! That is primo! Just look at the
definition: “a group of individuals who HAVE TO enjoy golfing.” He plays golf
at times he should be meeting with the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Ding-ding, we
have a winner!

Take
note, I don’t hate rich people-90% of them honestly deserve their money. If I
hear another person tell me that Bill Gates is a bad person because he doesn’t
give $1 to every person in the world, I think I’ll go so crazy. I may consider
voting for JMac Daddy. HAVE YOU PEOPLE EVER HEARD OF THE BILL AND MELINDA GATE
FOUNDATION!? Of course not. You’re stupid. Now just make some money, and you’ll
be a “stupid rich people.”

Point
is that the 90% who honestly deserve their richness should be paying higher
taxes than others-because it won’t hurt them. If I made over $600,000 a year, I’d
be glad to be paying taxes that were a little higher than other people!
Whatever happened to America
being a country where those better off can help those less well off? For our
generation, I feel that people like George W. Bush and his followers are the
answer. They’ve depressed the nation so dramatically that nobody cares about
anything anymore. But don’t worry, kiddos. Certain people (coughObamacough) are
making this carelessness into something much more: from being thrown out of
hospitals to universal healthcare; from helping daddy look better to ending the
war in Iraq; from eight years of crap to a future not so crappy. He’s moving
the nation, especially the younger voters. And even you can’t deny that, Mr.
and/or Mrs. Republican Reader.

The
people who aren’t helping, however, are the millionaires and billionaires who
feel that paying more than ten bucks a week for national taxes is “unfair” and that
it is “class warfare.” Have you ever seen these same people donate money to
good causes? Neither have I.

We all
aspire to have a successful future; we all aspire to gain happiness and make
lots of money. Fact is happiness is something that nobody but you has any
control over, and few of us will make lots of money. But for those who do, ask
yourself: are you going to be a cool, rich person or are you going to be a
“stupid rich people?” Don’t choose the latter; instead, if you become one of
the few lucky ones, do good things with your money. Buy a Ferrari; go to grad
school; but also donate to a good cause.

“You
have not lived a perfect day, even though you have earned your money, unless
you have done something for someone who will never be able to repay you.”

The Work Place Etiquette Workshop acquaints UNH students with etiquette

by ankitsharma | September 17, 2008

WEST
HAVEN–As soon as the Work Place Etiquette Workshop began, the stage of Dodds
Hall was ushered with professionalism.

The
workshop was presented by both Kristin Cruz, the Graduate Assistant for Career
Services and Kathy Forkin, Career Services Director, at different times.

The
workshop acquainted UNH students with the skills required for a position,
getting rid of common mistakes, and the UNH rules and regulations for a job.
The workshop enabled the students to deal with problems at work such as
schedule/time conflict, maintaining focus on students and trouble with a
project/task.

The
workshop concluded by giving the students certain helpful tips such as
correctly and clearly filling out a time sheet, maintaining a clear
communication with the supervisor, maintaining a planner to be on time and
dressing to impress.

Loom out
for more helpful career workshops offered by Career Services throughout this
semester. Check out http://www.newhaven.edu/academics/10985/ for a full
