As the school year started, the executive board members of the Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society were deciding what their first event of the semester should be. They wanted something that would be fun and that would grab a lot of students’ (and the West Haven Community’s) attention. It came to be that a beach clean-up was the answer everyone agreed upon. From then on, flyers were made and posted around campus as emails were sent to all organizations. Word of mouth spread like wild fire. In the end, ALD Honor Society’s beach clean-up grew from one organization involved to about a dozen campus clubs and sororities. In planning this enormous event, ALD was constantly in contact with these organizations and the West Haven Parks and Recreations Department, for which a permit had to be established. Finally the day came. On Saturday, Sept. 19, Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society was joined by UNH’s Paintball Club, BSU, Green Team, PIRO, Psychology Club, FSCC, Surf/Ski/Snowboard Club, NSBE, SMILE, SIA, and student volunteers Carisa Sanchez, Stacey Mathew, Kristen Martinez, Emily Luna, Sharana Cook, Alyssa Stringer, Cynthia Melendez, Annairis Escobar, Caitlin Fennell, Marcelino Class, and Marco Arcos. They cleaned not only Bradley Point Beach in West Haven, but also Painter Park: a well known picnic and recreational area of West Haven. The day was a great success. In total, over 60 students worked together to show UNH’s surrounding community that they cared about not only the environment, but also about teamwork and making a difference. They were shown appreciation by some of the residents of West Haven that witnessed this great event. The Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society would like to thank the students that were involved, as well as ALD’s advisors Rosalie Swift and Edmund Todd for their guidance and assistance. ALD is looking forward to future events that are fun and that bring students together.
