The Student Committee on Programming Events, fondly known as SCOPE, has once again given the UNH community a wonderful Spring Weekend. Things got started with a bang on Friday night with the concert.Volunteers started arriving at Charger Gymnasium as early as 7:00 in the morning to start setting up for the big night. A total of four box trucks were unloaded that morning; the contents of the trucks transforming the gym into a concert venue. The university is in close contact with the student's mother who notes her son does not have H1N1. Since one of her other sons, who is in high school, does have the virus she has placed her UNH student on Tamiflu as a precaution. On Friday Apr. 24, 2009 the Sisters of Delta Epsilon Beta and the Brothers of Sigma Chi successfully raised fourteen hundred dollars during their annual Sleep-out for the Homeless. All proceeds went to Life Haven, in New Haven, CT. Life Haven is a non-profit organization that shelters over 150 families annually. The purpose of this event is to help raise awareness of homelessness in the area and to raise money to assist the community, by helping to provide homes for those who do not have them. WASHINGTON, D.C. -- On Wednesday Apr. 22, 2009, the Supreme Court of the United States heard the oral arguments of Ricci v. DeStefano. Ricci v. DeStafano is a case based out of the New Haven and involves a firefighter promotional exam. In 2003, members of the New Haven Fire Department sat for an oral and written test to be promoted to the ranks of Lieutenant and Captain within the city. The swingin' sixties were back at UNH this week with the theater department's rendition of A Flea In Her Ear, a sex farce set in the 1960s in Paris between a sketchy hotel, The Hotel Pussy á Go-Go and Victor Deboshe's living room. Flea was originally written in 1902 by George Feydeau, the father of the modern farce, and was translated by Frank Galati for a theater in Chicago. The National Day of Silence brings attention to anti-LGBT name-calling, bullying and harassment in schools. Every six hours of every day someone is been violently attacked for being lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender. Hundreds of thousands of students including our very own UNH students came together on April 17 to encourage schools and classmates to address the problem of anti-LGBT behavior. Over 100 members of the UNH community took part in the SCSU/UNH Relay for Life at Southern Connecticut State University Saturday night into Sunday morning.The UNH Relay Committee has been working since the end of last year to plan this event. NEW HAVEN--On Saturday, April 18, the Fire Science Club held its fifth annual banquet at Amarante's Sea Cliff in New Haven. The event celebrated the achievements of club members, faculty, and the election of the new executive board. With 200 attendees including students, staff, and alumni, this year was the club's largest attendance yet. NEW HAVEN - The University of New Haven men's and women's outdoor track and field teams competed at the 2009 Yale University Springtime Invitational on Sunday in New Haven. The women's team was led by junior Shannon Gagne who won both the 100 and 200 meter dashes, while Kevin Downing by winning the same two races.Downing broke the UNH record and won the 100 meter with a time of 10.46 seconds, beating his previous record of 10.62 seconds.
