The Student Committee on Programming Events, fondly known as SCOPE, has once again given the UNH community a wonderful Spring Weekend. Things got started with a bang on Friday night with the concert.Volunteers started arriving at Charger Gymnasium as early as 7:00 in the morning to start setting up for the big night. A total of four box trucks were unloaded that morning; the contents of the trucks transforming the gym into a concert venue. The swingin' sixties were back at UNH this week with the theater department's rendition of A Flea In Her Ear, a sex farce set in the 1960s in Paris between a sketchy hotel, The Hotel Pussy á Go-Go and Victor Deboshe's living room. Flea was originally written in 1902 by George Feydeau, the father of the modern farce, and was translated by Frank Galati for a theater in Chicago. The show opens up in the living room of insurance agent Victor Deboshe (Jeremy Tortora). Madame Yvonne Deboshe (Sonnie Lebbing) calls for long time friend Lucille Homenides de Histangua (Sally Nieborsky) ... [read more]
The much anticipated X-Men Origins: Wolverine finally clawed its way into theaters on Friday, May 1. I, like many other fans of the X-Men and of Wolverine, came into the theater with jittery feet. I found myself waiting for each trailer to hurry up and finish, just to get the movie started. So there I am sitting and tapping my toes, with my girlfriend by my side just as anxious as me, until finally the lights dim down causing my eyes to focus on the film ready to begin. Now before I begin my criticism, I already expect the film ... [read more]

The World on Four Strings

The Soloist hit theaters Friday, April 24, and both Jamie Foxx and Robert Downey Jr. contribute outstanding performances. As a matter of fact, I can't picture any other two actors better for their roles. The movie is based on the true story of Nathaniel Ayers Jr. (Jamie Foxx), a musical (cello) prodigy, and his unlikely encounter with Los Angeles columnist writer, Steve Lopez (Robert Downey Jr.) I must admit, the beginning of the film does drag a little, but once Jamie Foxx appears on screen, the chemistry between him and Robert Downey Jr. makes it hard to turn away from. ... [read more]

A panel of four judges scrutinized over the myriad of musical stylings, giving scores for originality, musicianship, showmanship, and success of satisfying the requirement of performing an original cover of a Britney Spears song. The first group up was The Trails, a minimalist and experimental duo ... [read more]

Over breakfast I could still see the sorrow in his eyes. It was clear that UNH student Pat Kelly had lost the love of his life. And maybe even his will to live. For most students, spring break was filled with friends, sun, and maybe a few beers. For Pat Kelly, spring break contained the day he wished would never come: Mar. 20, 2009. The air date of the Battlestar Galacatica series finale. When he returned to school the next Monday, Pat had obviously lost that spring in his step. The album art features a fierce-looking redhead crouched on the hood of a burgundy Mercury Cyclone and holding a sword. The redhead is Tacoma singer-songwriter Neko Case, and the album is her latest contribution, Middle Cyclone. Released Wedensday, March 4, Middle Cyclone is Case's fifth solo album and follows 2006's critically acclaimed Fox Confessor Brings the Flood. Case is more widely known for her work with The New Pornographers, but her solo work is equally powerful (she is often compared to Patsy Cline) and just as catchy.  Unlike some of her earlier albums, the tracks of Middle Cyclone are distinctly ... [read more]

3D Film Brings Viewers to Fantasy World

The movie Coraline hit theaters this Friday, Feb. 8 and like many fans of The Nightmare before Christmas, I went to theaters expecting a magnificent experience. To my surprise, the film is actually based on a novella written by Neil Gaiman (comic writer for "The Sandman").Aside from the television trailers and the great reviews, upon entering the theater this Saturday and putting on my 3D glasses, I couldn't help but feel hyped for the film. And when the lights turned back on in the theater as the credits began to roll, the audience stood on their feet and gave applause ... [read more]

Twist Ending Kills Uninvited

I love a movie with a good trick ending. The Sixth Sense when you first realized that Bruce Willis' character was dead. Righteous Kill when the main killer of the story switched before your eyes. Even The Village, when you first notice that the villagers are part of some psychological experiment. Many movies, and their directors, are capable of pulling off a trick ending without having the audience feel as if they have been left in a cloud of confusion. This is not the case in the latest horror flick, The Uninvited. With a decent cast (Emily Browning and Elizabeth Banks), ... [read more]
