Habitat for Humanity was started during the fall semester last year, by a group of 10 to 15 freshmen. We spent the next year recruiting upperclassmen and now have a large group of about 40 members. Our club was formed in the hopes of working with the Habitat for Humanity for the Greater New Haven area. We have now expanded on our original mission of just wanting to help build houses, to doing more community service activities.

In the past year we have held two large events:

• Clothing Drive after Thanksgiving break for students to come and donate their extra clothes, toys, bedding, shoes, etc.

• Tom’s shoes documentary: on Tom’s shoes ‘One Day Without,’ we walked barefoot around campus, raising awareness for the cause. We then showed a documentary made by the founder of Toms shoes.

We will be holding our clothing drive again starting the Sunday that we come back from Thanksgiving break. So watch out for dates and times! This semester we are looking to do walks, beach clean ups and other community service events!

In order to get involved, you can email the club account (habitatforhumanity@newhaven.edu) or President Matthew Carroll (mcarr6@unh.newhaven.edu), or just stop by a meeting Tuesdays at 9:15 p.m. in K109.

The Sports Industry Club

The Sports Industry Club was founded in the spring semester of 2005. Our purpose is give students an inside look at the sports industry, facility management, personnel management, facility safety, marketing and general administration.

The club does so by meeting and networking with executives and personnel from the four major sports leagues (MLB, NFL, NHL, NBA), minor leagues, other collegiate athletic departments and marketing firms. We also serve as a social environment that allows students to enjoy the sports world to the fullest extent in their leisure time.

Some of our more popular events include the annual Powderpuff Tournament in October where proceeds go to the Susan G. Komen foundation, Madden tournaments, viewing parties and trips to professional and collegiate sports events, and bringing in guest speakers such as Brian Jennings, Brian O’Gara, Chris Burman, Tony Sparano and many more.

To be involved in the Sports Industry Club you do not have to be a sports management major, just really into sports or wanting to learn more about them! Our weekly meetings are Mondays at 4 p.m. in the BSAC conference room. For more information please contact us at sportsindustryclub@newhaven.edu !

Up ‘til Dawn

We raise money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and one thing that stands out is that the families and patients at St. Jude never pay for anything – treatment, lodging, food, travel, and the list goes on! They are also worldwide, treating patients from all 50 states and from around the world! Another amazing aspect is that the research they do is shared with everyone. Their goal is for there to be a day where they can close their doors because there is a cure.

Since they don’t ask the families to pay a dime, they call upon volunteers like us to raise the $1.8 million dollars a day that it costs to run the hospital. This is where Up ‘til Dawn comes in. Thirteen years ago, a group of students came together one night to stay up until dawn and asked for donations on behalf of the hospital; it was in honor of the parents and kids that stay up late dealing with these deadly diseases. We honor this tradition on our campus and will stay up until 6 a.m. fighting the yawn to help St. Jude with their mission at our Finale event on March 9, 2013! St. Jude started because the founder Danny Thomas believed no child should die in the dawn of life, and we share that belief.

We started putting on a Benefit Concert last year. We have local acts from our college perform and we charge a cover charge of about $2. All proceeds went to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. This year our benefit concert will be in the German Club, Nov. 27, so look out for more information!

This year we are also planning a ZOMBIE PROM! The zombie apocalypse is coming to UNH on Oct. 19 in the German Club. We are looking into a cover charge and you will have the opportunity to get zombie-fied!

Our “Finale” Event will embody everything Up ‘til Dawn stands for while the campus comes together to FIGHT THE YAWN! This year’s event will actually be an all-night event on March 9 from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. This year’s theme is Nickelodeon and we plan to bring our childhood back in order to help save the childhood of those in St. Jude. “Giving back a childhood, One Letter at a time.” We will transform our rec center into a play center, where we will have inflatables in different rooms and activities all night long. So join us to help save the kids of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

We have a lot more events in between, so join us and keep an eye out for us! September is when Chili’s does a give back to St. Jude, so visit Chili’s and color in a pepper to benefit the hospital!

If you are interested in getting involved, feel free to email our Up ‘til Dawn account at uptildawn@newhaven.edu. We have open bi-weekly meetings for those who want to learn more and get involved! We can keep you posted! Or find one of the two Co-Directors: Jason Segal and Nazly Bokhari. We’re always open to speak with anyone about getting involved!

The Fire Science Club was created after the Fire Science Department was established in 1972. Our mission is to provide fire safety education to students, and to advance knowledge, involvement and camaraderie in the Fire Science Community.

Our most popular events of the year include the Burn Box, Docudrama, and Annual Banquet. This year’s Burn Box will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 10, and we will be setting two replica dorm rooms on fire to demonstrate the protection provided by automatic sprinkler systems. Fire suppression provided by Allingtown Fire District.

The Docudrama will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 16, and we will be demonstrating, in real time, the Fire, EMS and Police department response to a DUI accident. Our banquet will be held in the spring of 2013 and is open to the entire student body to celebrate a successful year at UNH. We also hold BBQs periodically throughout the year, and networking and training opportunities to our members.

Honors Student Council

Honors Student Council is an organization on campus that allows Honors students to interact with one another outside of the classroom. The mission of the Honors Student Council is to actively engage members and the entire UNH and greater New Haven community through campus activities and community service.

We act as liaisons to the Honors Program administration and the Honors students, by providing a place where students can display their opinions and concerns about the Honors Program and UNH in general. We provide Honors Students with a comfortable atmosphere apart from their intense workloads.

In the past, we have put our annual International Food Festival in the spring semester. Students will have the opportunity to experience diverse foods, cultures, and music. We also hold a week-long Green week event series during which students can make their own necklaces and lanyards, edible dirt cups, and sand art.

We also raise money for certain organizations such as Art from the Heart by selling Christmas and Valentine’s Day candy-grams. Within the next few months, we will be going Haunted Zip lining and rock climbing. We are also planning a trip to New York City to see a play.

Students can contact us by e-mail at: honorsstudentcouncil@newhaven.edu. Honors students can get involved in the HSC by easily attending our meetings. We hold meetings the first and third Tuesdays of every month. Students can request to join the group on Charger Connection or just e-mail our account.

Honors students can also find out about our events through the Honors Program event calendar. We would love to see new faces and hear new opinions. We are a fun club that likes to release the stresses of academic life through fun activities.

THE ELM CITY REVIEW

The Elm City Review is an organization at the Unviersity of New Haven, under the English Department, whose goal is to spread the importance of literature and other creative works throughout the UNH campus. We accomplish this goal by publishing a magazine that is filled with music, art, photography, drawings, poems and short stories that are submitted by the students from the University of New Haven.

We try to keep busy around the UNH campus in many ways. Each of these events not only promotes The Elm City Review but they help the students in all ideals that The Elm City Review represents. Examples of events include: workshops, game nights, writing events, movie nights and much more! We also co-sponsor events with the English department, most notably, the Arts @ Night series, which brings poets, authors and other literary figures to campus for readings and presentations. During our meetings, we also encourage members to bring their favorite pieces of poetry or photography to share with the group.

The Elm City Review produces a fall and spring literary magazine every school year. This magazine is edited, organized, and selected by the members of the Elm City review. All of the members have a hand in the process of making the magazine. This includes the reading of submissions, editing, distributing the magazine to the UNH students, and, of course, having fun!

Members of the Elm City review will also help in the distribution, advertisement and publicity of the literary magazine.

This is the most rewarding and critical part of the club. Everyone is involved and has a part of the process until the end! If you want to join the Elm City Review or are interested in submitting for the fall magazine, please contact elmcityreview@newhaven.edu for more information.

Organization Spotlight: Delta Phi Epsilon

by Joann Wolwowicz | March 23, 2011

The Gamma Epsilon chapter of Delta Phi Epsilon at the University of New Haven was founded on May 12, 2007. From 25

The Lovely Ladies of Delta Phi Epsilon of the Gamma Epsilon Chapter of the University of New Haven.

strong, independent women who sought to expand Greek life at the university came an organization of 60 unique women who now live by their founding principles of justice, sisterhood, and love.

Living by their motto, “Esse Quam Videri – to be rather than to seem to be,” the sisters are greatly involved both on campus and throughout the community, actively participating and encouraging service to both the community and society as a whole. Their philanthropies include The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Anorexia Nervosa & Associated Disorders (ANAD), and the Delta Phi Epsilon Educational Foundation.

In the fall, the ladies put together their annual Deepher Dude competition to raise money for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Additionally, in the spring, they plan their “Healthy Body Image and Eating Disorder Awareness Week,” to remind everyone that you should “measure your heart and not your waist.”

With 14 new members this semester, the lovely ladies of Delta Phi Epsilon continue to grow in numbers, while providing their members with positive experiences and opportunities for personal growth and leadership. Not only do they enhance the talents, strengths, and skills of their members, but they also prepare them to contribute to the world in the future.
